These traffic signs in Sweden capture our obsession with smartphones

Look around a crowded street nearly anywhere in the world on any given day and you'll likely see the same thing: people glued to their phone screens.

After nearly getting run over by a car because he was staring at his phone, Stockholm, Sweden resident Jacob Sempler decided to make a "personal art project" addressing the distracting dilemma with his creative partner Emil Tiismann.

The result is a series of traffic signs in Sweden that warn about people using their phones while walking down the street

"One morning when I walked to work I almost got run over by a car because I was staring at my stupid smartphone," the 29-year-old Sempler tells Tech Insider. "I looked around, and realized that I wasn't the only one."

"We're addicted to social media," he says. "I mean, so am I."

Sempler hopes his sign "will make people think twice the next time they pick up their phones."
