Transport blueprint for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games released
The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) reached a significant milestone in June with the release of a detailed plan addressing how athletes, officials, spectators and accredited Games workforce can reach event venues during the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018).
The GC2018 Transport Operations Plan (TOP) – which was jointly developed by the Department of Transport and Main Roads, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) and the City of Gold Coast – also outlines how the transport system on the Gold Coast and the event cities of Brisbane, Townsville and Cairns will keep moving leading up to and throughout the landmark event.
It includes information about how Games time transport infrastructure (transport hubs, temporary park ‘n’ rides, transit malls and the broader road network) will operate, and the tools that are being developed to help people understand their travel options and plan their journey.
The TOP takes into account forecast travel requirements, the competition program and learnings from major events on the Gold Coast and in other event cities. The local transport industry, businesses and the community played a vital role in the development of the TOP, with the final document incorporating feedback from consultation that took place following the release of the draft document in November 2016. The GC2018 transport partners conducted consultation over a three month period, which led to over 540 pieces of feedback being submitted in response to the draft plan.
Residents, visitors, businesses and the freight industry have a vital role to play in keeping the Gold Coast and event cities – Brisbane, Townsville and Cairns – moving during GC2018. TMR has commenced information sessions for local businesses and residents to provide information about temporary changes to access and traffic in their areas. These sessions are run in conjunction with our GC2018 transport partners and will be held up until Games time.
A successful transport operation is critical to the success of GC2018 with thousands of athletes, officials, volunteers and workforce and more than one million ticketed spectators expected to attend GC2018 events.
